Wolf’s lair – visit in the former top-secret Nazi headquarters

What is wolf’s lair?

Wolf’s lair (Wilczy Szaniec in Polish) is the site of the former top-secret Nazi headquarters hidden in Masurian woods. It was created in 1941 and 3 years later it was a self-sufficient town where around 2000 people lived. Adolf Hitler spent there 800 days, accompanied by the most famous Nazi prominents.  It was there that the most important decisions were made. It was also the place where, on 20th July 1944, Claus von Stauffenberg and other conspirators attempted to assassinate the Führer.

What is there to visit in Wolf’s lair?

As you can guess, a place with such a history could not remain intact at the end of WWII. As a matter of fact, it was destroyed by the Nazis themselves in January 1945. While the Red Army troops were approaching, Nazi Germans didn’t want the buildings to fall into their hands. Therefore the entire complex was mined and the bunkers were demolished.

Today one can visit the ruins (which are very picturesque), preferably assisted by a local guide, and 2 small exhibitions (one of them provides all the details about the assassination attempt in 1944). Individual visits are also possible, even with pets. It’s the first “museum” I visited with my dog, who seemed to have fun too. The place is beautiful because of the surrounding nature, which makes the visit quite pleasant, especially in spring.

How to get there?

The easiest way to get to the Wolf’s Lair is by car. If you want to get there by public transport from Warsaw, for example, it will take around 7-8 hours, but I’ve never tried it… The nearest village is called Gierłoż.

How to book a guided tour of Wolf’s Lair?

In high season you will find guides near the main gate offering their services, although I can’t assure that an English-speaking guide will be available. It’s best to book a guided tour in advance, preferable with a guide who can drive you there from your accommodation (I can help you with that). By the way, if you wish to spend a night in Wolf’s Lair, it’s possible to book a room in one of formers bunkers. For reservation call +48 89 741 00 31
